📋 How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Prepare for Your Appointment

To ensure a smooth, legally binding signing experience, please complete these preparation steps before your scheduled appointment time.

1. Bring a Valid, Unexpired Government Photo ID

Michigan law requires all signers to prove their identity. No exceptions can be made.

  • Accepted IDs: State Driver’s License, State ID Card, U.S. Passport, or Military ID.
  • Important: Your ID must be current and unexpired. The name on your ID must match the name on your document.

2. Keep Your Documents Unsigned

  • Do Not Sign Ahead of Time: Documents must be signed entirely in the presence of the notary.
  • Complete All Blanks: Fill out all names, dates, and text fields on your document except for the signature and notary blocks before your session begins.

3. Know Your Witness Requirements

  • Check your document instructions to see if witnesses are required in addition to the notary (common for deeds, wills, and powers of attorney).
  • In-Office: Please bring your witnesses with you.
  • Remote Online (RON): Your witnesses must be physically present with you at your computer or join the video session digitally. Let us know in advance if you need us to provide witnesses (additional fees apply).

💻 Additional Steps for Remote Online Notarization (RON)

Additional Steps

If you booked a 100% digital remote signing, your setup must meet these state-mandated security requirements:

  • Tech Setup: You must have a laptop, desktop, or tablet equipped with a working webcam, microphone, and a stable, high-speed internet connection.

  • Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA): You will be prompted to answer a few security questions based on your public records history to verify your identity before entering the video room.

  • ID Scanning: You will need to take a clear, well-lit photo of the front and back of your government ID using your smartphone or webcam.

⚖️ Quick Guide: What a Notary Can and Cannot Do

Notary Can and Cannot Do

To keep your transaction fast and legally valid, it helps to understand the strict legal boundaries of a Notary Public in Michigan.

✅ What We CAN Do:

  • Verify Identity: Confirm that the person signing the document is exactly who they claim to be using valid photo identification.
  • Witness Signatures: Watch you physically sign or digitally execute your documents in real-time.
  • Administer Oaths: Legally swear or affirm that the statements made in your document are true.
  • Certify Forms: Complete the mandatory notary certificate block verifying that the signing was done correctly under state law.

❌ What We CANNOT Do:

  • Give Legal Advice: We cannot tell you what a document means, advise you to sign it, or explain its legal consequences.
  • Choose Your Forms: We cannot tell you which document or specific notary certificate format your transaction requires.
  • Draft Documents: We cannot write, modify, or fill out the legal substance of your documents for you.
  • Notarize Blank Papers: The document must be entirely filled out (except for the signature fields) before we can stamp it.
